Makeup is my medicine

Makeup is my identity. It allows me to go out and face the world feeling strong. When I’m not wearing it, I don’t feel confident in myself and my self-esteem is low. Applying makeup to my skin gives me such joy and I don’t just feel better in myself when I look in the mirror but the whole process of experimenting with colour and testing different products gives me great pleasure.

I have always enjoyed using makeup, as far back as I can remember. In my school days a winged eye liner was my thing, but lets just say I probably didn’t have the best makeup skills in the world back then. Watching videos galore on youtube has become a bit of an obsession of mine. Over the past couple of years makeup has become a big part of my life and something that I look forward to every day. I have been questioned on my reasons for wearing so much makeup before and they couldn’t understand that I don’t just do it to make myself ‘look better’ but it’s what I do every day and I wouldn’t be the same person without it. It’s like my art, I’m expressing myself through my makeup.

We don’t need makeup to be happy and there are so many people who look beautiful with nothing on their skin and that’s their thing, but it’s not mine. It’s not the only thing that makes me happy, I have lots of things and people in my life that allow me to be happy but makeup plays a big part in my self love. My makeup defines me and I love the fact that I can choose exactly how I want to look each day.

Some people might find this superficial but it’s important for everybody to have ‘a thing’ that they can relish in and focus on. Sometimes to distract them from negativity and any worries they may have. Doing that one thing that makes you you. It’s also important for self-love. Proving to yourself that you are good at something! But also to give you purpose. Everybody has a purpose in this world and although some people may show that they have more purpose through being more outgoing or proactive and dominant, we all have it. Find that thing that defines you and show your purpose.

To me, beauty and makeup and colour is like the finishing touch on everything.
